When my mouth lies

Sometimes when my heart is sad

And my body is tired

When all the melancholy lands

With its very weighty presence

On my shoulders

I fall into a chair and sigh

I smile

On purpose.

At first it is gentle

difficult to do

but with determination

I sit with all of the hard things

And wait as my smile gives them wings

And eventually

The awful heaviness dissipates.

I go on smiling for a bit

Just to make sure

Because my mind doesn’t know my mouth is lying

It’s the body that keeps score.

*Smile. It confuses the mind.
