Slippery stepping stones

This moment while the frogs sing

And the magpie sleepily warbles

This moment

As I drink bitter coffee in the time before the sun

This moment is full of grace and beauty and I am grateful

We have no idea what is coming towards us on the path

It could be bad news

It could be illness

Disease

Death

Of course miracles and joy all await us too

So many moments I have taken for granted

Times I shared with special people that I will never see again

Talk to again

Instead sometimes I have conversations in my head where I whisper “I wish I had said”

Right now I am peaceful and happy

I rest in it knowing

this moment is all there is

And it becomes inflated, huge and quiet with my gratitude

But it will end

As they all do

And it will flow into the next moment – and the next

But I was here for this one

And hopefully

I’ll be here for them

*Whatever this day brings, and it will probably bring ups and downs in equal supply, I hope you realise, as I try to, it is such a blessing to be alive.

  1. I like that line, I was here for this one; and your poem reminds me how important it is to show gratitude when grace does come our way: lightly written but a poem with heft !

    • Thanks for the kind thoughts John. These days pass so quickly it is easy to take them for granted and yet we are only given so many. Our time is finite. I was reminded of this when I heard news last night that a dear friend has cancer. I try and recall at least a few times during the day that time is passing and it is precious.
