Animal

In the moment before dawn

The Sun stole a kiss

And all the air from the wet lung of the earth left her as she sighed

Then seconds later

The golden rays spread out wide suffusing her surface with well being

I felt it and smiled as I ran

The warm fingers of sunlight creeping over my shoulder

The pleasure received from warmth in winter

Reminds us

We are merely small animals here

The Gods of the planets rule our atmosphere

And is the reason the Sun has been revered

Forever

*photos mine. I’ve been on a monochrome bender for days. I thought it would wear off, not yet. Winter here so we seek the sun. In summer we will again hide our heads and cover our eyes. Australia is a land of extremes.

  1. this poem strikes a chord with me, Kate: I love it when the warmth of the sun disperses the iciness of winter: only 10 degrees C here right now brrrrrrrrrrrrr

    • We are into the negatives at dawn but then, as long as the sun is out, the temps climb steadily to around d 18-23 degrees John. So lovely days cold nights but I do love that first touch of sunlight in the morning when I’m out – it feels warmer almost straight away

      • I love it too, Kate: nothing to celebrate weather-wise today : you’d have to be a Shakespeare or Mary Oliver to wring some joy out of today’s anemic offering 🙁
