When a butterfly emerges
No one is watching
Except the organism
That is transformed
Nobody understands it either
Not truly
We can observe the exterior
But we can’t feel the experience
Of sludge
Becoming membrane
Growing wings
Or the confusion
Occurring within
A tiny brain
Metamorphosis happens
Far from the gaze
A caterpillar builds a coffin
Enters a grave
And one day in the future
It alights on a flower
That the breeze gently tends
And the journey it went through
Makes no sense
And matters not a fig
To the bird that swoops
For breakfast
