A delightful lack of impact

The morning birds sing

Whether they have an audience or not

And the crickets in the grass

Do not cease to hop

Or clamour

Simply because I walk by

The sun rises and sets

Without any human intervention

Nature is its own force

And before it

Our innate human narcissism

Falls away

  1. Kate, this piece seems to me like a gentle reminder of nature’s independence and timeless rhythm. I feel like the contrast with human ego is both subtle and quite profound!

    Much love,
    David

    • I think it is why humans need nature David, it grounds us into our true place in the world, makes us realise we are not the centre of everything. The hawk that flies above the presidents head does not care who he is, and neither does the ant beneath his feet. The idea that nature has nothing to do with me reminds me that other people don’t either – we are lost in our heads but the birds sing regardless. They are here. Truly here.

  2. This reminds me a little of the very first stages of the pandemic, when it *felt* like the world was collapsing, but all we needed to do was look outside and observe that nature remained its same, magnificent self…as it always has been, regardless of what humans do. (Unless, of course, we destroy it, which unfortunately is the case too often.)

    • Yes Yacoob. I largely ceased to watch mainstream media during the pandamic, I think I have stopped with all but a few accounts of social media as well now. Nature is the best way to cut the noise and realise Our natural safety net which lies beneath everything

  3. Very profound. 👌
These birds sing, with or without an audience. However, humans of today are more concerned with doing things to show off to others. We are caught up in materialism and are obsessed with keeping up with the Joneses.
