The Shadows of Crows

Shadows appear as the sun rises to light their dark form
Delayed reality
The thoughts were there before dawn
From the time I woke up
They circled
like the crows I now observe
Black as pitch
They kettle boil
Crying
Ark Ark ohhh
I send my rumination to their wings
“Take them flying” I sing
And the crows
launch into the sky.
The sun rises
The world tilts to match my interior

I turn my torso to face the sun
Close my eyes
Light floods the templed cranium
No shadows hide inside
For now

A golden glow from head to toe

Breath steaming dreaming

Ark ark ohhhh

*it occurred to me this morning as I walked before dawn and through it, that shadows need the light to take form. Before the sun, I had no shadow to stretch out beside or in front of me, but as the sun rose so did that dark form suddenly there she was – out to my right, moving along.

And there was a metaphor close by my tongue that I liked about that idea.

The higher the sun rose, the more my shadow took shape, darker and darker, more clear it was made.

No light, no shadow, all shadow, no light. We are the sum of both

Where crows gather and boil , there is a murder, although it wasn’t them who was at fault.

An emu carcass lay off to the side of the road, its mate looking lost in the next paddock over. I’ve watched this pair the last few years as they are always together – or were.

Emus mate for life I think, the male watches the eggs. I don’t know the gender of the one who died. Just that the other is now a shadow without its light.

I’m enjoying making the videos and it’s easy to set and forget the little camera on my cap and then edit later.

  1. I liked the combo of media here: a poem, some prose and a video. Nice read! It looks to me like you’re in a beautiful part of the world too – I love the morning light on the grass!

  2. Gorgeous landscape, Kate. Thank you for sharing your video and subsequent thoughts about your shadow. An interesting paradox isn’t it. Ever thought-provoking and creative. 🙏🏻
