Retail Therapy

Like a bird unable to alight

I could not find peace

Nor quiet

Branches of thought crumpled beneath weight

And my mind buzzed loud with words

I could not speak

Yet they formed thick sentances

And I had not brought a notebook with me

I walked the block

Drifting from shop to shop

Smiling and exchanging pleasantries

About the rain turning into sunshine

“What a lovely day” we murmured to each other

Those shop owners and I

As I circled and circled

Trying to find

Something

Not quite knowing what I was after

If anything at all

After half an hour

I picked up a small cap for my grandson

Bottle green

Small enough to fit his head

Perfectly

Something about thinking of him

Finally

Folded my wings

I sipped coffee

Stared into the distance

As my body remembered the way

To sit in the moment

The suns rays warming tense shoulders

My ears tuned into the voices around me

And gradually I realised

I was finally still

The buzzing had gone away

I could taste my food

I bought a book

I hope to read it

Without frequently staring beyond the page

My stomach churning

With unspoken rage

So many words

A vocabulary full of descriptors

Yet diction contrived to carry all these mind pictures

Is best put down on plain

White paper

Neatly lined

Spiral backed

I’ve filled so many notebooks

With all of that

And still it just keeps going ..

  1. wow, Kate. This is great. You’ve described me and my moods to a T without losing the vivacity of your own. Having another read. Bookmarking. This is a keeper !!
