Aphantasia

Thoughts are things

They have weight

Texture

Sound

Colour

Outlines

Tiny pieces of art

This apple

That tree

An autumn leaf

Spiralling down

Down

Down

To the ground

At least they do for me

So vivid and clear

And I wonder if that is half the power in their ability to distract

Make me believe in their persuasive, invasive presence

If I only had Aphantasia instead

But then

I wouldn’t be nearly so creative

I don’t think ..

*I only learned of this condition Aphantasia a few days ago. I dream and think in such high fidelity that my head may as well be watching a movie most of the time.

Which is excellent for creativity and terrible for anxiety. And apparently there are degrees.

We are all so very different .

The people that have aphantasia don’t think in pictures at all, they can’t imagine in that way. I can’t even think about not being able to think in pictures without thinking in pictures. I wonder if such people aren’t as emotionally connected to everything in the same way. I find it so interesting, I would love to talk to someone with this way of processing the world.

*header photo, this lone sandshoe made me wonder about its story and whether its other pair missed it. I’m sure its human owner did. When there are two, we always need the other or it doesn’t make sense. To be a solo shoe, sock, boot, glove…luckily humans don’t need a pair, but it’s nice when you find one.

  1. I think I have a form of Aphantasia . My pictures are vague, sometimes only ‘suggested.’ The words and emotions are clear, though, and that seems to be the important currency of dreams, both night-time and day-time ones.

    • Hi Tony, that’s so interesting. It makes sense that as long as there is language (thoughts) there is emotion as one begets the other but I wonder if they are as intense an experience. There are so many variances in the way we experience life – some people can hear colour or see it as numbers and others have a memory that is so intense with vivid pictures that they call it photographic. Thanks for sharing your view, I appreciate it.
