The Secret of Trees

And the trees begin to whisper

like they are sharing a secret that only they can hear

But if I’m very quiet

And very clear

I can hear it too

*In silence,

nature,

everything becomes clear, it’s as if we too become our natural selves and blend into the breath of the earth, the breeze.

The wind chime words of poetry begin to bubble freely

And our consciousness returns to the earthen surface of our creative source

New ideas begin to sprout as we turn our minds to something like

Cleaning the dust from surfaces

Pegging washing along the line

A hum of happiness

A tune I haven’t thought of in years

Old thoughts are gentle instead of conflicted

Welcomed in like old friends

Instead of smothered.

Silence is a state of being

Chosen

It arrives by the block where I chop kindling

Sit by the fire

Turning the soil

Sifting weeds through my fingertips

Cooking

Whenever then

I give my hands something productive to do

My hands often conjure silence

And when they do

And I realise I am in it

I like to feel my ears opening

Stretching

Silence is not a nothing

It is an everything

And when we become very still

Forearm hairs raised

Feet absorbing

We become part of everything too

This tree looks like it is astride the other tree

*this was supposed to be just the one small poem but then something unravelled so I followed it

I’m glad I did, it returned me to a meditative place inside, one I love and often drift into when walking through nature and observing everything

Photos through from my walk through the national park a week or so ago

Vines embracing trees
Delicate hug
Throwing arms around
Stunning pandanus views

And here is yesterday’s post from Substack if you want to click across. I’ve been banging on about poetry and art being medicine for awhile now but the book I was reading last week offers scientific validation of how art is extremely good for our brains and creates healthier humans all round.

I also publish a (different again) weekly post on my website as well – subscribing is free and there are no likes or follows publicised so it’s very quiet and peaceful.

I know that’s a lot of reading (because I do a lot of writing😊) and certainly don’t have any expectations but it’s lovely when folks from WordPress find their way there.

Meanwhile this blog will always be the priority because my first love is poetry and my favourite community is this one ❤️

  1. I love when our mind takes over and the thoughts just continue on. And loved the poem, yes if we listen quietly we can be a part of it too.

  2. wonderful, Kate : poem and pics; esp like how when our hands are busy — e,g, hanging clothes on the line, bringing them in — our ears are opening —
