Try
Or do not try
Either write
Straight and directly
Exactly what truth wants to say
Or walk away and don’t even begin
Because to get half way in
And flinch
Is to corner something wild
And cage it
And if you do that
The wild part
The vital
Mercurial unruly heart
won’t trust you anymore
I wrote this at the start of the year, left it in drafts – it’s the end of June. I’m ready to live into this and not flinch with my writing.
2026 goals
Not to write stupidly carelessly crassly which I’ve never done anyway
Rather, to not self edit the posts that come boiling
Not in rage
But just in truth spilled over on the page
I do flinch sometimes, have done in the past when something writes itself down that I then carefully tuck away because hmm maybe not now
There is judicious editing
And then there are those that slightly frighten us with their intensity and truth
They sear us
So we stop
But I’ve come to see that what is in my system
Is alive in others
And when we allow the energy out to roam
Others find a home for their feelings as well
Writing is both selfish and terribly generous in that regard

I imagine that we all have a letter or something similar sitting in our draft files Kate. Those letters don’t necessarily need to be sent but you make a good point about the importance of completing them.
Be well and do good. Well, at least some of them!
Kind regards,
DD
Hi DD you’re right – I probably over share 😬perhaps I treat my blog as a personal note to my future self and it’s interesting to look back on as I have been doing lately. We change immensely and not much at all over time.
This is beautiful writing honest and true
Thank you Carolyn ✨
Kate this is magnificently written but the editor in me says. end it with ‘the wild heart won’t trust you anymore’; going on just dilutes the potency and is vestigial: at least consider what I said. John 🙂
I agree John.
Thankyou, I have taken your edit on board.
Cheers
Kate
great ! it is now a VERY strong poem —
Thanks John 🙂
