Songs of Memory

We sing see saw margarydoor

And swing in the dappled shade

Your laugh is a gurgle

I feel in my chest

Sunlight flickering against my eyelids

Me with my mother

My sons

And now you

See saw margerydoor

You lean back

I sigh

Swing higher

look into the sky

And we are almost one

As I melt

And become

My entire life in one motion

Love

Is attention

It is noticing the moments

Dimpled fingers

Strawberry leaking on your shirt

The way your pinkie stretches politely

As you stuff that berry in

Grin

And say “more”

Broad solid little feet

Pattering pigeon toed

Curling under the high chair

Just out of reach

Of Chiefy’s nose

Surprisingly fast on the flat

Careful

Don’t tumble

Oh!

Ouch on the hot sand

Stuffing them into crocs

Wiggle wiggle

I still help a little

But you’ve mostly got it now

All of it

Clumsy to capable

Growing so fast

These days are precious

See saw margarydore

Round and round the garden

This little piggy

I’ll be boring soon

But you

You will endlessly fascinate me

Like your Dad before you

Loved so deeply

You steal my attention

Completely

Bringing me into the moment

Filling it with joy

Laying down myriad memories

Weaving your bright soul

Into my mind

And heart

Sealing it in there

Thank God

I have them all nailed down

For now at least
