I peer into the void
Twist the focus ring gently
Snap
A flower
A leaf
A lesson appears
Insights descending into consciousness
So clear you wonder why you didn’t see it before
Obvious now
Ignorant before
The ring turns back
foreground blurs
A series of moments
Viewed through a lens
Who wields the camera?
It would appear I am
*photographing macros in the evening with a double glass lensbaby optic. The lens is designed to be blurry everywhere but the centre and even there, I had a breeze handicap occurring as I walked around late yesterday evening, so the centre isn’t quite sharp.
But I like it
The colours and shapes as they emerged in my viewer, had me hooked. I can live with imperfection. Art is a broad brush to paint with. These have a feeling of a floral evening dream.
Macro photography is an absorbing hunt, I lean in close and twist the ring, searching amongst the blur for my target, suddenly it appears sharply in my view finder, I smile, breathe and try and engage the shutter carefully to avoid undue movement.
The flower appears suddenly in all its magnificent magnified glory, out of the soupy sea of colour reminding me of how we are sometimes struck with insight. It can be quite transformative, we never view life, or at least a part of it, in the same way again.
Macro insights.
A lovely way to start the week.

I love the hazy, dreamy appearance of these photos. The one of the succulent with the spider’s webs is really something! And the photography as a metaphor of sudden insight or inspiration — love it! ❤️
Thanks Camilla, I loved these too. Thought about blowing a few up as abstract prints but probably won’t get around to it. I enjoy them for the day and then something new catches my eye. How truly art mimics life, I think that is why we practice it.
Funny — today I sorted through my extensive collection of stones and shells, keeping what I love (most of it, to be fair!) and returning the rest to nature. Beachcombing is like that for me: every rock, every fragment of colored shell is a singular work of art, captivating in the moment. My interaction with what I see is to magpie it home with me for awhile. 🙂
I do the same. I’ve always picked up pieces of nature since I was a child and brought them home. I particularly love feathers 🪶
Oh my. I haven’t even begun to contemplate how to “downsize” the feathers! Once again, we are on the same page! 🙂 🪶
I like it, too! All of it. 💗
“… you wonder why you didn’t see it before” I’ve wondered the same. Suppose we see things when we are ready. Just a thought, among many. 🙏🏻
Hi Michelle, I feel like that too, like we only see it when we’re ready, it almost feels like a game sometimes that we reach levels of. More often than not I seem to be learning the same lessons but from ever newly emerging perspectives. It certainly keeps life interesting 😊
Yes, it does! 😊
I like what you’ve done with that lens. Pretty darn cool.
I love these lenses. A few of them you can’t get anymore, they always kickstart my photography if I feel a bit stuck for ideas
fascinating, Kate ! you inspire me combining poetry with photography — though I suppose my photo tells a story
Poetry is painting pictures in the mind and photography is showing the poetry of the person behind the camera. I’m finding they intermingle and compliment each other well. I loved the story to go with your photo John, the overgrown grass and mailbox told the story of neglect well.
thank you, Kate 🙂
