Circle back

Who are you at 3am

Sitting on the front step

Staring into the darkness

Lit by thousands of stars

Perhaps a full moon

(But not together

They are sort of a one or the other

Shine

The stars fade when the moon is bright)

Who are you then?

At 3am

As you sip coffee and perhaps ponder poetry

the beginnings and end of your own mortality

Because there is a beginning

And an end

To that person at 3am

Who will be gone by 10

Vanished off the face of the earth

That human

Social mask in place instead

And by 5pm

Exhausted by the daily day

Only barest scraps remain

But wait

Patiently

The precious time will come again

24 hours will track the crack in time

And you can sit

And find yourself unwinding

Beneath the stars

Before the world awakes

And tells you who you are

Or should be

Or could be

If you only just

Stop!

You already are

Everything

And if by some miracle you make 3am a daily thing

Eventually

You will never lose yourself again

(Though you may need a nap around lunchtime 😊)

    • Thanks Lynn, and thanks for reading, it’s nice to have your company at this early hour – well for me at least, it’s probably evening where you are ✨

  1. The stars are so bright , the moon too. It’s low hanging in the sky , like lanterns .. your verse your words have a beautiful poignancy to it. Feel a sense of homecoming.. very heartfelt indeed.. thank you for this.

  2. With these lines I want to sit for a spell. Many elements to appreciate with your poetic craftings and life (and death) musings. One way or another the need for sleep catches up with us and the same is true for our last breath. 💫 A treat to spend time with your poem, thank you Kate.

  3. finally have a chance to comment on this. this is a wonderful allegory, if you meant it to be, to who we are at various stages of our life. but even if that wasn’t your aim, i still find meaning in it as I can relate to being a unique self at determined times of the day. when i think of it, and as the celestial nod to your piece, we all were a different person in one plot of our position in relation to the center of the milky way and are more than likely different now as we find ourselves in a different position. of course, it’s funny given the vastness of our universe. but still, this piece is wonderful 😀 Mike

    • Thanks for this lovely thoughtful comment Mike. I think my poetry is whatever it means to you. That’s why I share, it meant something to me when I wrote it and then it catches people wherever they are at in their lives. I circle back on my own poetry and it means something different twelve months later, any art is a moving canvas.
