White noise

At some stage

You become enough

And when people walk away

You don’t chase

If they feel inclined to stay

That’s nice

Some may prevaricate

Standing on the threshold

They may threaten you with their absence

Or not call

Write

Hoping you will close your eyes

And yearn

But don’t, because

This is thing they don’t tell you when you are small

It is better to be abandoned by everyone

All

Left like dirty washing on the floor

Than to leave

Even for the second hand beat of a clock

Yourself

I think when you’re little

And you’ve been sent away

There is a claw that tightens around anxiety

It pulls it close

Into the chest

Worry builds a nest

Of twigs

And fragile feathery things

But set that old stuff on fire

You don’t need it anymore

Stand

On one leg

Poised perfectly, balanced

And watch

The smiling sun rising

If you can day after day

Be like that

Come home

Before the world tilts

And flames colour the sky

You will see stars

Moving

Smell orange blossom blooming

In the dark

This three dimensional world will embrace

You as your own

And the hare that comes out and stands paused

Will be enough company

More than enough

In fact the sound of his chewing

Will be

Pleasantly noisy
